The Ambassador of Malta to Germany, Vanni Xuereb, hosted a reception in Berlin to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Malta’s Independence. The event also marked 50 years since Malta became a Republic and 20 years of EU membership. Ambassador Xuereb and his spouse, Mr. Charlo Baldacchino, welcomed a distinguished group of guests including officials from federal and state institutions, diplomats, and members of the consular corps, and representatives from various sectors of German society including the business and economic sectors.
In his address of welcome, Ambassador Xuereb reflected on the strong relationship between Malta and Germany, emphasising the shared values that underpin their bilateral cooperation. He highlighted the fruitful meeting between Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in November 2023 as a testament to the strong ties that are reflected in trade, investment, and cultural collaboration. Ambassador Xuereb also pointed to Malta’s active role towards global peace and security, and the respect for human rights, positioning the country as a steadfast partner in the international arena.
Ambassador Xuereb also referred to the message by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Dr Ian Borg, who spoke of the significance of the anniversary of Malta's Independence.
The other speaker during the reception was Mr. Detlef Bischoff, Honorary Consul of Malta for the Free State of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt who gave an account of a successful business trip to Malta in 2023. He also outlined the potential Malta offers as a hub for investment and business incubation, describing it as an ideal location for fostering commercial growth and innovation.
Following the singing of the Maltese, German and European anthems, the guests were treated to a selection of traditional Maltese dishes, including staples such as Timpana and Braġjoli, while the distinctly Maltese soft drink Kinnie was served alongside other beverages. The culinary experience, prepared under the guidance of Mr. Baldacchino, provided an authentic taste of Maltese culture and cuisine.
The Embassy of Malta acknowledges the valuable support of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, the Malta Tourism Authority, and KM Malta Airlines, all of which played a vital role in the success of the event.
Heidelberg Reception
Malta Day was also celebrated in the city of Heidelberg in Baden-Württemberg with a reception hosted by Malta’s Honorary Consul, Dr Rainer Dulger and his wife Christina Dulger. Ambassador Xuereb and Mr Charlo` Baldacchino were the guests of Honour. In a brief address, Ambassador Xuereb reflected on the words of the Maltese national anthem and on the noble sentiments that the anthem evokes.
Both events exemplified the enduring relationship between Malta and Germany, reinforcing ties across a variety of sectors while offering opportunities to deepen cultural and professional connections.
