The Embassy of Malta in Cairo signed a Grant Agreement with Banati Foundation, an Egyptian NGO which protects and supports children at risk, to implement a project called “Empower HER through Education,” which will be funded by the Overseas Development Fund within the Ministry for Foreign & European Affairs and Trade. The agreement was signed by H.E. Mr. Roberto Pace, Ambassador of Malta to Egypt and Dr. Hanna Abulghar, Chairperson of the Banati Foundation.
The project brings together various initiatives and workshops aimed at boosting self-confidence among homeless girls aged between 12 to 21 currently residing at the Banati Foundation and provides them with the necessary tools and knowledge required to practice good personal hygiene and learn about crucial topics such as sex education and menstruation.
New software tools will be introduced to help assess and meet the developmental needs of the girls under Banati’s care. Furthermore, a dedicated library of educational material will be established to ensure a lasting impact on both current and future residents of the foundation.
During his visit to the NGO’s premises, Ambassador Pace commended the staff’s impactful work and expressed his hope that this new collaborative effort between the Government of Malta and Banati Foundation would strengthen the latter’s capacity to help children at risk. He also added that the project is in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 6, i.e., safe toilets and water for all by 2030, in addition to other SDGs related to well-being, quality education and women empowerment.
Ambassador Pace was accompanied by Mrs. Lina Al Nafouri, Deputy Head of Mission and Consul and Mr. Pascoe Grima, Second Secretary.
