On Tuesday, 07 February 2023, Mr Charles Calleja, First Secretary at the Embassy, hosted the first ever informal gathering for diplomats from the 10 Elected Countries in the United Nations Security Council present in Israel, at the Chancery. This event was organised in partnership with the Swiss Embassy.

Mr Calleja, who presided over the meeting, spoke about Malta’s priorities for its two-year tenure and explained that these will be based on the three principles of Sustainability, Security and Solidarity. Representatives attending the meeting also had the opportunity to present their own country’s priorities. Mr Calleja then gave a detailed presentation on Malta’s work programme during the Presidency of the Council in February 2023.

Malta took over its one-month Presidency of the UN Security Council from Japan on 01 February 2023, with Mozambique taking over at the beginning of March. Malta will then have another term at the helm of the Security Council in 2024.
