On Thursday 14th March 2024, Ambassador Cecilia Attard-Pirotta, together with First Secretary at the Embassy, Mr. Charles Calleja, welcomed students from Tel Aviv University Model United Nations (TAUMUN) to the Embassy of Malta in Tel Aviv for a special presentation on Malta and diplomatic life in Israel.

The event delved students into Malta's diplomatic engagement and relationship with Israel. Ambassador Attard-Pirotta underscored the importance of fostering stronger ties between Malta and Israel through dialogue and exchanging ideas. She emphasized the significant role played by the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade in promoting Malta's interests on the global stage, particularly given Malta's tenure in the United Nations Security Council for the years 2023 and 2024.

"By facilitating discussions and sharing perspectives, we strengthen the bonds between the people of Malta and the people of Israel," remarked Ambassador Attard-Pirotta during the presentation. She encouraged the students, particularly women, to consider careers in diplomacy, highlighting the impact they could have in promoting peace and cooperation on an international level.

First Secretary Charles Calleja provided an overview of the duties and responsibilities of the Maltese Embassy in Israel, shedding light on the Maltese Islands' history, economy, and cultural richness. He also shared insights into the work carried out by Maltese diplomats worldwide, emphasizing the significance of diplomatic missions in advancing national interests and fostering international cooperation.

The interactive session gave students valuable knowledge about Malta's diplomatic efforts and its role in the global arena. In addition, the students and the Maltese Ambassador engaged in a candid discussion about the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. The Ambassador seized the opportunity to reiterate Malta’s unwavering call for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages held in Gaza while expressing Malta’s grave concern regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the strip.

As diplomats residing in Israel, the Ambassador as well as the Embassy staff, shared the collective trauma resulting from the events of October 7th and their subsequent aftermath. The Ambassador emphasized that Maltese history bears witness to war's devastating impact. In this context, the Ambassador solemnly reminded all parties involved that there were no winners in war.

In conclusion, Ambassador Attard-Pirotta and First Secretary Calleja expressed their gratitude to the students for their interest and engagement in the discussion. This initiative reflects the Embassy of Malta's commitment to promoting cultural exchange and dialogue between Malta and Israel. The Embassy aims to strengthen bilateral relations and foster mutual understanding between the two nations through such engagements.
