The Government of Malta has made a voluntary contribution of €20,000 towards the implementation of ‘Moneyval’s 5th round of mutual evaluations’, which ensures that financial systems and the broader economy are protected from the threats of money laundering and the financing of terrorism and proliferation, thereby strengthening financial sector integrity and contributing to safety and security.
Malta has also made an earmarked contribution of €20,000 with respect to the ‘Venice Commission’s action to promote the development of democratic institutions based on respect for the rule of law and human rights’ in the Southern Mediterranean region. The aim is for targeted countries which are ODA-eligible benefit from a more efficient and transparent judicial system, and an improved legal framework and practice in the electoral field, as well as in the field of functioning of democratic institutions.
Ambassador Lorenzo Vella, Permanent Representative of Malta to the Council of Europe, and Mr Bjørn Berg, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, signed the agreements on 7 December 2021.
